Technology Adoption

David Rees & The Adoption Curves

Professor David Rees (1918–2013) was a distinguished British mathematician known for his groundbreaking work in commutative algebra at the University of Exeter. During World War II, he served at Bletchley Park in Hut 6, contributing to critical Enigma research and the development of the Colossus computer — one of the earliest programmable electronic machines.

Rees’s mathematical legacy has found unexpected relevance in the world of cryptocurrency. His name has become associated with discussions about Bitcoin’s origins and the mathematical underpinnings of decentralized technology.

📈 The S-Curve of Bitcoin Adoption

The S-Curve is a model for how new technologies are adopted by society. It traces a path from initial innovation through exponential growth and eventually to mass saturation. Bitcoin is currently progressing along this curve, with analysts placing it somewhere between the Early Adopter and Early Majority phases.

The key stages are: Innovators (the first ~3%), Early Adopters (~10%), Early Majority (~40%), Late Majority (~30–40%), and Laggards (~10%). Between the Early Adopters and Early Majority lies a critical “chasm” — many technologies fail here, but Bitcoin continues to cross it with growing institutional adoption, ETFs, and global acceptance.

🔄 The R-Curve: Resilience Through Cycles

While the S-Curve models cumulative adoption, the R-Curve (Resilience Curve) describes Bitcoin’s unique pattern of surviving and strengthening through repeated market cycles. Each “crypto winter” or regulatory challenge tests the network, and each time Bitcoin emerges more resilient, more decentralized, and more widely adopted.

The R-Curve helps explain why Bitcoin’s price action follows a “double S-Curve” pattern — first the hype cycle, then a consolidation, followed by a new wave of adoption that brings the next leg of growth. Understanding both the S-Curve and R-Curve gives you a powerful framework for seeing where Bitcoin is headed.

Gavin regularly discusses these adoption models in his Bitcoin education content, helping you understand not just what Bitcoin is, but where it’s going and why acting early matters.
